Tips from CRELA Trainers

The IELTS Speaking test lasts just 11-14 minutes, but it’s often the section students feel most anxious about. Unlike Writing, there’s no time to plan and revise — you’re evaluated on how naturally and effectively you communicate in real time. Here’s what our trainers at CRELA tell every student aiming for a high Speaking band.

It’s Not About Big Words

One of the biggest myths students believe is that using complex vocabulary automatically boosts their score. In reality, examiners score you on four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Using a difficult word incorrectly hurts you far more than using a simple word correctly and naturally.

Trainer tip: Focus on using a range of vocabulary appropriately rather than hunting for impressive words. A well-placed idiom or collocation used naturally will always outscore a forced, memorized “advanced” phrase.

Fluency Means Flow, Not Speed

Many students think talking fast shows fluency. Actually, fluency is about speaking with minimal hesitation and logical flow — not speed. Short pauses to think are completely normal and expected, even for native speakers.

Trainer tip: If you lose your train of thought, use natural linking phrases like “what I mean is” or “the way I see it” to buy yourself thinking time without going silent. Silence longer than a few seconds is what actually costs marks.

Answer the Question That Was Asked

In Part 1 and Part 3, examiners often notice students giving generic, pre-prepared answers that don’t quite match the question. This immediately signals a rehearsed response and can affect your Fluency and Coherence score.

Trainer tip: Practice active listening during the test. Pause for half a second after the question is asked, mentally note the key point being asked, and structure your answer directly around it before adding extra detail.

Part 2: Structure Beats Memorization

The cue card in Part 2 gives you one minute to prepare and up to two minutes to speak. Students who memorize entire answers in advance often sound unnatural and get penalized for it. Instead, use the one-minute prep time to jot down 4-5 keywords covering the bullet points on the card.

Trainer tip: A simple structure works best — introduce the topic, give context (when/where/who), describe details, and end with a personal reflection or feeling about it. This keeps your answer organized without sounding scripted.

Grammar: Accuracy Over Complexity

You don’t need to use complicated grammar structures to score well. Using a mix of simple and complex sentences accurately is far more effective than attempting elaborate structures that lead to errors.

Trainer tip: Naturally mix tenses where relevant — for example, using present perfect when discussing past experiences with present relevance (“I’ve always enjoyed reading”) alongside simple past and present tense in the same answer. This shows range without forcing it.

Pronunciation Is About Clarity, Not Accent

A common misconception is that you need a British or American accent to score well. Examiners assess whether you can be understood clearly and whether you use appropriate stress, rhythm, and intonation — not which accent you speak with.

Trainer tip: Focus on word stress in longer words and sentence stress to emphasize key information. Recording yourself and comparing it to natural speech patterns is one of the fastest ways to improve this at home.

The Real Secret: Practice Like It’s the Real Test

The single biggest factor separating Band 7 students from Band 9 students isn’t natural talent — it’s consistent practice under realistic conditions with honest feedback. Talking to a mirror doesn’t reveal your blind spots. A trained evaluator does.
