A Realistic Study Plan
Got your IELTS exam date and only a month to prepare? Don’t panic. While ideal preparation takes 2-3 months, a focused 30-day plan can absolutely get you exam-ready — as long as you use your time wisely. Here’s the exact structure we recommend to students at CRELA when time is tight.
Week 1: Diagnose and Build Foundations
Before you start practicing blindly, take one full diagnostic mock test to identify your current band level across all four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. This tells you where to focus your limited time.
Spend the rest of the week on:
- Reviewing basic grammar structures (tenses, articles, subject-verb agreement)
- Learning the format and question types of each section
- Building a vocabulary journal organized by common topics (education, environment, technology, health)
Week 2: Skill-Specific Practice
Now shift into targeted practice, dedicating specific days to specific skills:
Listening: Practice with one full test every two days. Focus on note-taking speed and identifying keyword synonyms — the exam frequently paraphrases what you hear.
Reading: Practice skimming and scanning techniques. Time yourself strictly at 20 minutes per passage to build exam-day pacing.
Writing: Learn the structure for Task 1 (overview + key features for graphs/charts) and Task 2 (introduction, body paragraphs with clear arguments, conclusion). Write at least one essay every two days and get it reviewed.
Speaking: Record yourself answering Part 1 questions daily. Listen back and note filler words, grammar slips, and pronunciation issues.
Week 3: Full Mock Tests and Feedback
This is the most critical week. Take at least three full-length mock tests under real exam conditions — same timing, no distractions, no pausing. After each test:
- Review every wrong answer and understand why
- Get your Writing Task 1 and Task 2 evaluated by a trainer
- Practice Speaking Part 2 and 3 with a partner or trainer for realistic feedback
At CRELA, this is where our structured mock test sessions make the biggest difference — students often see a jump of 0.5 to 1 band simply from focused feedback during this week.
Week 4: Refine, Revise, and Rest
The final week isn’t about learning new content — it’s about polishing what you already know.
- Revise your vocabulary journal and common essay structures
- Do light practice, not full mock tests, to avoid burnout
- Focus on relaxation and sleep in the final 2-3 days before the exam
- Review exam-day logistics: what to carry, reporting time, and test center rules
A Few Non-Negotiables for 30-Day Success
- Consistency beats intensity. One hour daily for 30 days beats a single 8-hour cram session.
- Feedback is essential. Self-study alone often reinforces the same mistakes. A trainer’s eye catches what you can’t see in your own writing and speaking.
- Track your progress. Keep a simple log of your mock test scores each week to see real improvement and stay motivated.
